Do you wonder what your dog wants when he walks towards you, sits and puts one of his paws in your lap or in your hands? Learn what a dog paw means in this guide.

    Paw in the Hand

The dog communicates through his paws but this does not carry the same meaning as a human handshake. When the dog is placing his paw in your hand, staring in your eyes, he really wants to eat, play, seek affection or he simply wants to make you aware that he exists.

    Paw Higher Up

The situation is totally different when the dog lightly places his paws on you shoulders or even on your head. This gesture is one way to express a friendly form of domination but you should not underestimate the meaning. The dog is trying to assess its position in the hierarchy, and type of movement could be translated in the human language as something like “Who’s really in charge?'
