    Sheltie Dogs: Breed Information Guide

    1.    Sheltie dogs, also known as the Shetland sheepdog, are an active, hardy breed from the herding family of dogs. Therefore, if you’re looking for a calm pet that requires relatively attention, a Sheltie is unlikely to be a suitable match. Shelties are one of the most sensitive dog breeds, and are nothing if not willing to please.

In fact, this loyalty to the owner can occasionally become a problem, with some Shelties becoming reserved (if not aggressive) around visitors to the house.

    2.    Sheltie puppies will be a bundle of fun, and it’s more than likely that by the end of the day, you’ll be more worn out from play than they will. Therefore, one of the major considerations anybody intrigued by the prospect of a Sheltie for sale needs to make is whether they will be able to satisfy the mental stimulation that these dogs require.

These dogs will be obedient and well-behaved provided you ensure boredom is kept at bay. Sheltie dogs live for catching balls and sticks, so it’s generally not recommended to keep these dogs cooped up indoors for more than a couple of hours.

    3.    The reflexes of the Sheltie breed can be second-to-none – but this particular trait isn’t always desirable. For example, these dogs may respond erratically and very quickly to sudden noises and movements, so early training is needed to ensure these dogs remain calm around the house.

Shelties are an extremely intelligent breed of dog (6th out of 80 dog breeds) and training shouldn’t be an issue at all provided it is rigorously carried out at an early stage. However, as they can be impulsive, it’s best to be cautious with this breed around very young children.

    4.    Perhaps the most favourable attribute of the Sheltie is the soft, obedient temperament that it exhibits around its owner. These dogs are the perfect companion to other family household pets, as they are fairly docile in nature around other animals.

One major problem with Sheltie dogs is separation anxiety – click the link provided to learn more about how to overcome this problem.

    5.    Finally, one major issue with Shelties that may provoke cause for concern with some prospective owners is their tendency to bark. Although this behaviour is fairly rare, once these dogs become fixated on something, barking can become extremely loud and hard to control.

However, as touched on above, the high level of intelligence of this breed often means this problem is simply a minor setback that can be curbed with the correct course of training. Learn how to stop a barking dog by reading the guide provided.
