It is important that you know how much fish food to feed your fish and how often to feed your pet fish food. This article should help you feed your fish food at the right times so you have happy and healthy fish.

Fish Foods – What and When to Feed Your Fish

    • The most common mistake that people make when they are feeding their fish food is overfeeding. Over feeding your fish will cause the filter in the fish tank to clog up. Excess food will also break down and release toxins into the water which are harmful to the fish.

    • You should find all of the warnings on the back of the fish food; make sure you read them before proceeding with feeding your pet fish food.

    • Fish in the wild will eat when they are hungry or when fish food is available. If food is plentiful then fish will eat many times a day and when food is scarce they can live for days without eating at all. This means fish are very opportunistic feeders.

    • Because of the fish’s natural opportunistic instincts they will eat whenever they get the chance. Fish quickly learn who feeds them and will pop to the surface and beg for food even when they are not hungry.

    • How often you feed your fish food will depend on the breed of fish. In general you can feed most fish once a day. Some owners choose to feed their pet fish food twice a day.

    • Regardless of how often you feed your fish food it is important you only feed them small amounts.

    • If you have nocturnal feeding fish then you should feed the fish food just before you turn the lights out at night.

    • Fish that are herbivores need to eat more regularly because their stomachs to not hold a lot of food. Remember that if the fish were in the wild then they would graze throughout the day on plants so you will need to feed these fish food more regularly.

    • You should never feed fish more than they can consume in 5 minutes. If in doubt you should underfeed.

    • The type of fish foods you choose is also important and will be more specific to the type of fish you have. if you are in doubt then you should ask the shop where you bought them.
