Shopping for a Dog – Essential Buys

    Food

When you first buy a dog youshould feed him with the same food that he has been bought up on to avoid any tummyupsets.

    Treats

When shopping for a dog youshould also buy some treats. Select treats that are suitable to use as trainingrewards. Some other treats you should buy are ones which help clean teeth andsatisfy chewing urges.

    Food and Water Bowls

Choose metal or ceramicbowls so they are heavy enough that the bowl will not move about or beoverturned. Dogs also will not chew these bowls so they will last longer andstay fresher.

    Buy a Dog Bed

You will need to buy a dogbed; the rigid plastic variety is usually the best for young dogs and puppies.Avoid wicker or foam beanbag type dog beds until your puppy is out of thechewing phase. You should put soft blankets in the bottom of the dog bed tomake it more comfortable.

    Dog Collar and Lead

As the puppy grows you willneed new ones so do not spend too much money on these items.

    Dog Toys

You should get some toysthat can be chewed and others which will offer your dog some mentalstimulation. The toys should be sufficiently robust and appropriate for thesize, age and breed of dog.

    Crate

You will need to buy a crateif you need your dog to travel in the car or for times when you can’t supervisehim at home.

    Grooming Kit

A soft brush and groomingmitt will usually be sufficient for puppies. As the dog gets more mature youwill need to buy nail clippers and brushes appropriate to the dog’s coat.
