Clicker training is one of the best ways to train any dog.Bernese mountain dogs are quite large and strong dogs that require goodtraining from a young age to ensure that don’t become uncontrollable later inlife. When training dogs, it is important to be consistent and fair and clickertraining is the perfect way to do both. Read on to find out more about clickertraining a Bernese mountain dog.

    Training Dogs With aClicker

    • The first thing you need to do when training dogs with a clicker is to make sure that the Bernese mountain dog knows that the clicker has an importance so hold the clicker and dog lead in one hand and some treats in the other. Stand in front of the Bernese mountain dog and calmly say his name, when he looks at you, click and give him a treat. Do this ten times and take a break for a few minutes. Test whether it has worked by clicking and seeing if the Bernese mountain dog responds, if he does, reward him, if not, repeat this step until he recognises that the clicker has an importance.

    • Once the Bernese mountain dogs recognise the importance of the clicker, use it when training dogs to do simple things such as sit or lie down. The best way when clicker training is use is when you see the behaviour happening. For instance, if you want to train the Bernese mountain dog to sit, click when you see the dog starting to do that behaviour. This will teach the Bernese mountain dogs the association between the behaviour and the reward.

    • When training dogs using clicker training, it is important that you don’t use the normal method of pushing the Bernese mountain dog’s rear down to get him to sit for instance because you don’t want him to associate the action of your arm with the click and reward. Wait until he does it himself.

    • The nest step is to assign a name to the behaviour. To add this part of the clicker training, say the command and then click once you see you dog do the action. Treat him once this has been done.

    • At the end of the clicker training session, get yourBernese mountain dog to do a behaviour he is already good at and reward himheavily when he does so. This large treat means the Bernese mountain dog willremember next time you start doing the clicker training and is more likely todo as you say.
