8 Week Old Puppy - Training Tips

Articlepet advice guidesTuesday 27 November 2012
    Share:

Justlike a baby, a two month old puppy focuses on his basic physical needs: eating, drinking, sleeping, eliminating and playing. However, the dog isnow beginning to show signs of intelligence – he can remember which behavior isallowed and encouraged.

What is an 8 week old puppy like?

A puppy of this age can now begin house training, learning basic skills and can undergo grooming - doing this will combat any indiscipline the puppymay be exhibiting.

    Size

Most 8-week-old puppies are only a fraction of theiradult height, length and weight. Most puppies will grow rapidly between 2 and 6months of age. How much they grow or gain will completely depend on theirbreed, diet and on the way they are being kept. Until they attain their adultsize (and as long as puppies are kept and cared strictly according to expertadvice), growth is generally steady.

    Teething

Puppies at 8weeks will have all 28 of their baby teeth and may develop their first adult frontteeth, called the incisors. They need chewing toys in order to facilitate theirteething; otherwise they are going to sharpen them on all other things they canfind in the house (shoes, furniture, clothing etc.).

    Senses and emotions

2 month oldpuppies will show fear, whimpering when hurt; barking when excited or wantingattention. You should not ignore their feelings; this period is when theirsocial sensitivity is being developed. Touch and affection is very important tothem – it can help develop their personality, courage and relationship withtheir owners. Although their sense-organs already work properly (sight, hearing, sense of smell), they still don’t know what to focus on, having juststarted to explore the world around them.

    Toilet Training

8 week oldpuppies can generally hold their urine for about 3 hours. This means you willneed to let them outside at least every 3 hours to avoid the hassle of clearingup the dog’s mess and the issue of the house reeking from the smell of urine

    Intelligence

Curiosity is reflected in a puppy’s eyes.Puppies are able to learn the easiest training tasks relatively quickly, but theyhave a very short attention span so it’s essential to focus on improvingconcentration. They learn a lot by playing (with their peers or even withhumans). Most people make a mistake when they do not allow the dogs close tothe children, saying that they need expert training. However, under strictlycontrolled conditions, it’s best to introduce a puppy to children at an earlyage so it knows what constitutes good and bad behaviour. Of course, if thepuppy begins to behave erratically, it’s essential to intervene straight away.

Some puppies have a brief phase of "fear" atthis time, fearing some objects, sounds and people. Do not let panic take. Youcan lighten a puppy’s common fears with progressive training. Take him forwalks as much as possible; the stimulating environment may do him good.

    Play & Agility

If we consider that most puppies learnto walk at 3 weeks of age and run at 5 weeks of age, we can easily understandwhy they are so clumsy at 8 weeks. It is only later when they are developing orjust improve their skills that intelligence increases. Puppies also learn tojump up at this stage so at first do not be angry with it as he only discoveredhis new abilities and has to try them. But do not let the puppy jump up onguests, as it can be difficult to train this behaviour out of him. Usingdisciplined commands and turning your body away from the puppy when he jumpscan curb this behaviour.

    Physical Appearance and HairCoat

2 month oldpuppies have a baby type hair coat that is going to change a lot until he growsup. Let your puppy get used to brushing and introduce regular grooming at anearly stage, just for short periods every day.

    Sleep

an 8-week old puppy sleeps approximately18 to 22 hours per day. You should not wake him up as he develops a lot as hesleeps.
