The main producer who works with Bear Grylls for his adventure program has finally spoken out about the time one of the world’s dealiest snakes in the world bit his foot.

The producer was working on the latest series with Bear Grylls called Man Vs Wild. They were shooting in Costa Rica when the attack happened.

Steve Rankin commented that “As I was traversing through some deep jungle, I was bitten on the foot by a Fer-de-Lance.

'It was under a fallen tree as I climbed over. Fer de Lance known to be aggressive and it just zapped me in the foot through my boot.

'It's one of the deadliest snakes in the world and the fangs went right through my boot,'

It was then that the crew decided to leave the area and took Rankin with them on a stretcher for 2 miles until they got air support to a hospital in San Jose.

The use of antibiotics and antivenom was still not enough though as the wound got worse and worse.  Rankin commented that 'About 5 days later the flesh in my foot had started to rot,'

The medical team looking after him had to remove a large piece of skin and after that he was sent to a hospital in Los Angeles where he received skin grafts.

Rankin posted the following on Twitter: 'Getting better slowly but surely. Gonna be a long slow recovery though. Thanks everyone for your good wishes. Skin graft came from my thigh so half of my quad is on my foot the other half is on my leg!

It is thought that the quick actions of the crew and emergency services were able to save his life.

Bear Grylls is is a former SAS soldier become a tv star after his survival techniques in the wild gained fame. These would include eating insects for food and drinking his urine in times of desperate needs.

The fer de lance is a vicious snake and is extremely venomous. It is part of the viper family. It is due to its place close to human settlements that it has picked up such a bad name. It will often enter towns and villages in search of food such as rats. It can be found in parts of tropical America and Asia. They can be as long as seven feet. Old Malayan settlements were based in areas where the snakes could provide a strong border of defence against enemies.
